Weekly TD-SCDMA Update January 5 - January 11

- China Mobile revealed its 2009 development roadmap for TD-SCDMA networks on January 10 and stated that it will invest 58.8 billion RMB (US$8.60 billion; ; US$1 = 6.84 RMB) in building an additional of 60,000 TD-SCDMA base stations during 2009, increasing the number of stations to 80,000 by year-end 2009, the Xinhua News reported. China Mobile stated that its TD-SCDMA network will cover 238 prefecture-level cities, which account for over 70% of total prefectural cities in China in 2009, according to the same source.

- On January 8, China Mobile announced that the company's TD-SCDMA commercialization has begun, the Sohu News reported quoting an executive of China Mobile. The issuance of long-awaited 3G licenses by China's MIIT (Ministry of Industry and Information Technology) on January 7 was regarded as the conclusion of TD-SCDMA commercial trials.

Additionally, China Mobile declared that its monthly subsidies for TD-SCDMA terminals worth 800 RMB (US$116.96) will also be terminated by the first quarter of 2009, according to the same source. Furthermore, as of December 31, 2008, the company demonstrated the interoperability of GSM and TD-SCDMA networks, which allows users to switch seamlessly between two standards, to help accelerate the adoption of TD-SCDMA.

- China Mobile plans to roll out a TD-SCDMA mobile phone based on Google's Android platform, Reuters reported on January 9. The device, dubbed OPhone, will be provided by Lenovo Mobile. According to the same source, the TD-SCDMA Android phone is currently in the final testing stage, slated for official launch in the first quarter of 2009. Further details were not yet disclosed though.
